The LEEP Campaign encourages facilities to install energy-efficient lighting and controls to cut energy use with the overall goal of achieving 500 million square feet of high-efficiency parking lighting by March 2015. FEMP encourages federal sites to join the LEEP Campaign and take advantage of resources, tools, and technical assistance related to high efficiency parking lot and parking structure lighting, and to be recognized for their successes.
The case study highlights the efforts of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at a facility parking garage in Kansas City, Missouri, which achieved a 76% reduction in energy consumption. The project included the replacement of 1,500 175-Watt metal halide fixtures with three-lamp 85-Watt T8 vapor-tight linear fluorescent fixtures couples with motion sensing lighting controls. The retrofit resulted in annual energy savings of 2 million kWh, annual cost savings of more than $122,000, and a simple payback of 2.5 years. The IRS was recently recognized by the Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking (LEEP) for Highest Absolute Annual Energy Savings in a Retrofit at a Single Parking Structure.
