SUMMARY:Economics of Ergonomics - August Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:This program is approved for 0.1 CEU's from IACET\n\nCourse De
scription:\nThis presentation examines in detail the economic impact of er
gonomic design interventions in commercial office environments. The talk r
eviews various cost justification metrics that can be used to evaluate the
impact of an ergonomics program. It examines the benefits of ergonomics a
s an attribute of designed products and the role of ergonomic designs in i
njury prevention. It describes the traditional steps involved in a reactiv
e ergonomics program and discusses the benefits and limitations of this ap
proach. It then describes the requirements for a proactive ergonomics prog
ram and argues for the benefits of this approach. To illustrate the econom
ic impact of ergonomic programs the talk presents a series of research cas
es including studies with various projects from the state of New Jersey\,
organizations in New York City\, software companies\, sales offices\, and
law firms. It shows that the return on investment for ergonomics intervent
ions makes these highly cost-effective and the details the financial benef
its of ergonomics.\n\nLearning Objectives\n1. After this course the attend
ee will be familiar with a variety of ergonomic design interventions for c
ommercial workplaces.\n2. After this course the attendee will be familiar
with the evidence-based research on effective ergonomic design interventio
ns.\n3. After this course the attendee will be familiar with measures\, me
trics and return-on-investment concepts as these relate to the ergonomic d
esign of workplaces.\n4. After this course the attendee will have a better
understanding of the benefits of proactive versus reactive ergonomics\, a
nd the power of design to significantly impact the well-being and producti
vity of employees.\n\nSpeaker's Bio:\n\nAlan Hedge is a Professor in the D
epartment of Design and Environmental Analysis\, Cornell University and a
Research Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineeri
ng at Syracuse University. He also directs the Cornell Human Factors and E
rgonomics laboratory.\n\nHis research and teaching activities focus on erg
onomic designs that promote health\, comfort and productivity\, especially
in healthcare and office workplaces.\n\nHe is a Fellow of the Human Facto
rs and Ergonomics Society and was awarded the 2003 Alexander Williams Desi
gn Award and the 2009 Oliver Hansen Outreach Award. He is also a Fellow of
the Institute for Ergonomics and Human Factors\, a Fellow of the Internat
ional Ergonomics Association\, and a Certified Professional Ergonomist.\n\
nHe has published three books\, more than 30 chapters and 200 articles on
these topics. He is on the editorial board of several ergonomic and relate
