This year, along
with the 30th anniversary of IFMA
Atlanta, we will host "Working Smarter not Harder"
as our 3rd Atlanta Workplace
Educational event. Along with an opportunity for
Atlanta IFMA members to network and socialize,
there will also be the chance to attend a World
Workplace event here in Atlanta. There will be
giveaways, a Silent Auction, and a Bingo lottery
type of drawing.
This event will
feature Mr. Jim Van Laak as our keynote speaker.
He will travel to the Buckhead Marriott to share
with us his experiences of the last 23 yrs. at
NASA. We will also have the 1st Vice
Chair from IFMA International, Mr. Marc
Liciardello, to visit with us at our afternoon
social and also open our event at 12:15 during
lunch.
We will have (3)
sessions running concurrently at 2:00 and 3:15.
You can choose (1) session to attend at each time
slot. Please check our flyer on the website for
advance knowledge about the choices for each
session and the exciting topics and interesting
speakers.
We will also have
our vendor expo open throughout the event. Please
stop by to learn current offerings and latest
trends in the facility management world. Also, you
can meet and re-connect with vendors who are
associate members of our organization and some who
support our organization as Sustaining
Patrons.
Our Silent Auction
event will offer something for everyone and will
conclude at the cocktail reception. We'll also
then have our Bingo drawing and a close of a
successful and fun day.
Please plan to
join us on Sept. 15th at the Buckhead
Marriott. We'll have a great experience with
market trends and products and professional
development. Early registration ends on Friday
9/2!

OCTOBER LUNCHEON PROGRAM
What: IFMA
October Luncheon "Telling the Story: Perkins+Will
Office - 1315 Peachtree Street"
When:
October 19, 2011. 11:30-1:30
Where:
Cobb Town Club
Register
Here!
Since 1991,
Perkins+Will has been encouraging clients to use
the LEED Rating Systems, meet the 2030 Challenge
and push the boundaries of sustainable design and
building performance. Very simply, their message
has been, "good design is sustainable design."
Perkins+Will started looking past LEED to more
ambitious sustainability goals - looking broadly
to the challenges of incorporating social
responsibility, global perspectives and corporate
transparency into achieving design excellence.
Their corporate mission is built around these
ideals. When it was time to design and build their
own building, they asked themselves, how do we
face those challenges and make sure our design
connects with our corporate mission? How do we
"walk the talk?"
In this case-based
session, participants will learn how a
multidisciplinary design firm connects their own
corporate mission to the design work that they
produce. The program will explore the design,
evaluation and decision-making processes required
to generate work which exemplifies design
excellence, high-performance, social
responsibility and financial soundness.

August Luncheon
Recap
Cool
Indoor BBQ & Lunch and
Learn
IFMA's
August Lunch 'N' Learn meeting was held at SCAD
Atlanta's Hub. The SCAD Event Team were
outstanding hosts for all 130 attendees for our
"Cool Indoor BBQ."
Sudhakar Lahade, Senior
Design Researcher at Steelcase was the informative
speaker. The program opened our eyes to the
creative uses of emerging technology and to the
greater excitement of what our future holds not
only as Facility Managers but as individuals
sitting on the cusp of a new and exciting
workplace.
Sudhakar's presentation
focused on some main
topics:
- Emerging technology has sparked a creative
new world in how we learn, work, create and
play.
- Key technology trends and advances are being
realized on today's corporate and higher
educational campuses.
- Technology is changing how we do even the
simplest of everyday tasks.
- Technology as a critical tool for branding,
communications, security, space management, and
even a safer environment.
SCAD's
"out-of-the box academic environment" was the
perfect venue for this gathering.

Tech Corner
The Georgia Tech Facility
Management graduate program announces the
offering of our Master of Science degree in
Distance Learning format. Students from outside of
Atlanta will now have access to the same learning
offered on campus beginning in fall 2011. Course
work is exactly the same, with Internet access to
lectures, lessons, projects and exams.
If
your company has locations outside of Atlanta,
within Georgia, the U.S. or even internationally,
your employees may be interested in this
opportunity. Please contact our Graduate
Recruiter, Brenda Morris at 404-385-7479 or brenda.morris@coa.gatech.edu for
details on how to apply for the distance learning
Integrated Facility Management degree. We hope to
bring the world into our virtual classroom and
expand knowledge of facility management worldwide.
The Atlanta Chapter support for this program
enables us to continue to expand and grow this
program, which is one of only four internationally
accredited programs in facility management at the
graduate level. Thanks for supporting us and
sharing this exciting expansion!

Mentoring Program in
Development
The
Career Services Committee is currently working on
developing a mentoring program. Anyone who is
interested in getting involved with this project
should contact Joe Carroll at 404-582-8859. The
mentoring program is designed to assist facility
management members who desire to sustain and
enhance their careers (increase competencies, earn
CFM certification, build relationships and/or gain
exposure to business leadership, etc.) to realize
personal growth in responsibilities and career
roles.
One example of a member seeking
mentoring is Arletrice Green. She is a graduate
student at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Arletrice is studying facilities management and
graduates in May, 2012. She also has a bachelor's
of science degree in Interior Design. She is
currently seeking an internship position in
preparation for her career in facilities
management. Arletrice can be contacted at
678-592-2779 or agreen911@yahoo.com. | |
