A
smile is the universal welcome -
Max
Eastman
I'd like to imagine that the
buzzword for facility management professionals around
the globe right now is Atlanta.
At the end of this month, our city will play host
to the International Facility Management Association's
(IFMA) World
Workplace 2010 Conference &
Expo. The event
will be held from October 27 through October 29, 2010 at
the Georgia World Congress Center.
With a year of planning behind us, it is our
Chapter's chance to welcome the world to our
hometown. I would like to express my
sincere congratulations to everyone for their hard work
and attendance.
With nearly a third of our
Chapter already registered, I wonder what motivated you
to attend. And I wonder if I can
convince a few more of you...who haven't quite
registered yet ...to do so even now.
The Expo Floor is the meeting
ground for vendors and professionals to get
together. In the Green Zone, an
exclusive section of the expo floor reserved for those
companies offering environmentally friendly products and
services; I'll be scouting out the latest trends in
sustainability to bring back to my office
environment. Additionally, our own
Atlanta-based venders will be stationed exclusively on
Peachtree Street, an area of the floor dedicated
exclusively to Atlanta-area exhibitors that will feature
nearly two dozen local IFMA members. Having the first
Chapter booth, Atlanta Central, "Where we all come
together" was planned for chapter members to congregate
and encourage others to meet the hometown
crew. We are encouraging conference
attendees to come by the booth and participate in our
BINGO game in which 500-$5 donations will be made to the
Foundation along with 1-$500 BINGO winner.
For the FMer's in the chapter,
are you having a tough time deciding which of the more
than 75 educational sessions (all for
CEU points) you'll be attending? IFMA
has organized training into 13 different tracks, these
sessions offer facility professionals the continuing
education necessary to keep both their professional
certifications current and meet the challenges posed by
today's workplace. Session topics include carbon
footprint reduction, energy saving, executive
management, high performance building, security,
sustainability and more.
Or is it just about
networking? In my previous
newsletters, I've talked about how social-networking via
the Internet is a great way to engage your
colleagues. But it is always a thrill
when you can be old-fashioned and meet the real-life
people behind the technology masks of our LinkedIn and
Twitter communities. That personal
connection means an awful lot to me as I've met both
friends and mentors at Workplaces past.
Finally, please also remember
that the conference also benefits the nonprofit IFMA
Foundation. On Tuesday, October
26th, Doug Underwood/Utilities Council Golf
Tournament will fund two US$5,000 scholarships for the
Foundation's scholarship program. The IFMA Foundation
Gala and silent auction will be held that same evening
and is sure to be a great beginning to the
conference. And finally, if you have
a passion for the role that education plays in the
future of the FM profession, please take advantage of
the opportunity to meet some of the brightest student
minds as well as leaders of the various Accredited
Degree Programs at the Thursday, October
28th, IFMA Foundation Education Reception
& Scholarship Presentation.
There so many more exciting
activities that this newsletter article would be a
telephone book if I mentioned them all, but these
highlights should be enough to convenience anyone who
has not registered yet, to do so. I
can't wait to see you all at the World Congress Center
and remember to smile. After all,
this is our party.*

Tech Corner
With
World Work Place coming to Atlanta in October 2010, the
Georgia Tech Facility Management graduate program would
like to have a big impact. Along with a booth in
the expo, students attending the Education Reception to
receive scholarships, and general attendance at the
conference, we hope to have students and IFMA Atlanta
Chapter supporters of the GT program prominently
greeting visitors and sharing information about our
program. Plans are underway, but will not be
finalized until later this
summer. If you can help out by
manning the GT program booth # 641 in the Expo for an
hour, or would like to take part in helping to promote
our program during World Work Place, please contact
Professor Professor Kathy Roper at 404-385-4139 or kathy.roper@gatech.edu. or Brenda
Morris at 404-385-7479 or brenda.morris@coa.gatech.edu. This
should be a wonderful (perhaps one-time) opportunity to
greet potential students in our
hometown.

Steering Committee
We are proud to share the

jointly with tvsdesign, engaged SCAD to develop

Gunjan Shama to capture the spirit of the IFMA
Atlanta Brand.
Please take a look at the final
concept and make sure you stop by the
IFMA Atlanta Booth to experience the end
product. Don't be surprised if you see the
SCAD Students at the booth sharing their
learning's and showing off the their great
design.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at
WWP2010.
Sincerely,
The WWP2010 Steering

A
Conversation with Annette Gorelick IFMA Atlanta Chapter
Secretary
by Chris
Sanders
It is a beautiful Indian
summer day in Atlanta, my husband and I are
driving with the top down to a local Starbucks to
meet with Annette for this interview. I am running
late and our interview time is finely scheduled
between other appointments. As I walk past the row
of outdoor tables, a woman's voice calls out my
name. I was happy that Annette recognized, not
necessarily me, but a woman who looked like she
was looking for someone. What struck me first
about Annette is her sense of style and lightness
of being. She is poised, confident, friendly and
approachable. Through the course of the interview
I also find out she is passionate about her
beliefs in protecting the environment and about
IFMA.

The Westminster Schools conducted an energy
and water audit this past year and was able to
identify potential costs savings of $200,000.
Approximately $150,000 of these savings have an
average payback period of approximately 2 years.
Facility Managers will learn the importance of an
energy and water audit in establishing benchmarks,
goals, and action plans. They will see some easily
implemented low/no-costs savings measures that
Westminster was able to put into action right
away. Jean Pullen, PE, was the consultant that
conducted Westminster's utilities audit. Jean has
a mechanical engineering degree from Georgia Tech
and over 25 years of experience analyzing and
implementing energy conservation projects in
existing buildings.

September Lunch
Recap
ASHRAE's
LEED Platinum Renovation and
Addition
September's IFMA Luncheon was a full house at
the newly renovated headquarters of ASHRAE
(American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and
Air Conditioning Engineers). Mike and Richard
shared with us their insights into the decisions
that led ASHRAE's recently renovated headquarters
successfully to LEED Platinum certification in
late 2009.
ASHRAE's decision to renovate
their existing headquarters -- one of only six
buildings in Georgia to receive a Platinum rating
- clearly put them at the forefront in setting
standards in sustainable energy while providing a
healthy, productive work environment. From reduced
water and energy consumption, to interior design
for the best use of lighting, to innovative
roofing solutions, creative landscaping, and
real- time energy monitoring ASHRAE has
successfully created a "Living Lab".
After
the presentation, members enjoyed a tour to see
first-hand how ASHRAE's innovative solutions and
design in renovated space can create a brighter,
positive future for all!

Breakfast Recap: Tour of
Corus360
-
Joseph Geierman, CFM,
FMP
Late
in August, a large group of Facility Managers
descended upon Corus360 - which operates a data
center that embraces "green" principles in the
Norcross area.
We listened to a
number of speakers talk about data center disaster
recovery, and then got to the meat - a tour of the
data center. The biggest revelation was that
the company has installed chimney stacks on each
of its server stacks so the generated heat is
shuttled directly from the servers to the air
conditioning unit. The overall energy
savings in that room are up to 30%
It was an interesting tour, and we
appreciated the hospitality of Corus360 so early
in the morning.

The associates committee hosted
its first ever Gwinnett Braves event on 8/28/2010.
This was a Saturday event where family members
were encouraged to attend. Overall we had 62
tickets sold and a perfect balance of associate to
professional members. This was our best attended
sporting event in several years. Special thanks to
