As we move into
the second quarter of the fiscal year, I would like to
formally introduce the Atlanta
Chapter's Balanced Scorecard to our members.
The writing of this plan has been a task designed to
give the leadership of the chapter purpose, direction
and guidance over the coming years. The Balanced
Scorecard is the strategic planning and management
system that was discussed at the 2009 World Workplace
House of Delegates in detail and encouraged to be used
by Chapters. Our goal was to align chapter
activities to the vision and strategy of the
organization, improve internal and external
communications, and monitor our Chapter performance
against strategic goals. In addition to creating
a scorecard, the Board of Directors has done several
things in this first quarter to help meet our
objectives.
The board has developed a
system to hold itself accountable for their time and
positions; we have created committee report forms that
make the monthly reporting process faster and easier
while allowing us to track volunteer hours for each
committee and the Chapter. It has also made it
possible to streamline our Board meetings to create
more strategic planning time, which in turn, will
benefit the entire Chapter.
We have
presented superior educational opportunities for you -
Atlanta Work Place, the new LEED EB/OM Study program,
Georgia Tech Book Signing Event, and monthly program
offerings. More opportunities will be presented
throughout the year. We have proposed some new
initiatives for membership as it relates to growth and
retention, targeting new groups and refining our
follow up with new as well as prospective
members. We will be presenting new venues and
programs for New Member Orientation, such as our first New and
Prospective Member Breakfast at Maggiano's on October
22nd.
In an effort to bring more
value to the Sustaining Patrons program, we have had
three focus groups with past presidents and sustaining
patrons to find out how we can bring more value to
Sustaining Patrons and their investment in the
Chapter. We have also planned an event in
partnership with the Associates Committee designed to
bring associates together with professionals and share
with them ways to bring more value to their membership
dollars.
Lastly, we have looked for
strategic ways to provide networking while
fundraising. We have moved the annual Golf
Classic to the Spring in anticipation of better
attendance and sponsorship later in the fiscal year
and have created a new (and hopefully annual) event
with a Bowling
Night, also designed to generate fundraising
dollars to support our Chapter's scholarships,
sponsorships and Foundation
obligations.
We have accomplished a lot
in our first quarter and will continue to work hard to
bring you added value to your membership dollars all
throughout the coming year. On the Chapter
surveys this past year, a desire was expressed to know
more about the Board's mission and objectives.
We hope that these quarterly updates will be
informative to you. If you have any issues or
concerns regarding the direction of the Chapter I hope
you will feel free to contact me directly at bzv6@cdc.gov.

Georgia Tech
Corner
Georgia Tech is fortunate to have
a record number of IFMA Foundation scholarship
winners this year with a total of FOUR
winners. Two Ph.D. and two Master's students
will travel to World Workplace in Orlando to
receive their scholarship awards and take part in
all that World Workplace has to offer. These
students include Candice Bullard and EunHwa Yang
at the Master's level and Pammy Juneja and Jun
Kim, both Ph.D. candidates working with Kathy
Roper on topics in Facility Management for their
dissertations. Based on both
grade-point-average and statement of study and
career intent, these students were selected from
among many applicants for only 25 scholarships
worth $63,000 (plus travel and registration) by
the Foundation. CONGRATULATIONS to our
Atlanta student winners and look for them at World
Workplace.

IFMA's
Atlanta WorkPlace:
"Transforming with the
Times"

Wow! What an amazing day
of learning and networking! IFMA's Atlanta
Workplace held at the Emory Conference Center on
September 10th, in conjunction with CoreNet Global
and AIA, was a huge success. If you missed
it, you missed a great educational opportunity for
professional (and personal) development, as well
as a great event to meet new people and re-connect
with those you already know! Not only was
this day filled with education but it also served
as one of our Chapter's major fundraising events
for the year. There were 220 attendees and
an additional 88 vendors represented! There
was a buzz in the air and an unmistakable energy
as members and guests from all of the
organizations co-mingled for this day of
professional growth and
fellowship.
The day began with the
breakfast keynote address, "Managing Brand YOU"
--- a very applicable topic for re-inventing
yourself whether currently employed or in career
transition. It truly set the tone for the
day, reinforcing the theme of the event
"transforming with the times". There were a
total of 15 educational seminars offered
throughout the day, with a broad range of topics
that included real estate, operations &
maintenance, sustainability, social networking,
workplace strategies, leadership, and finance to
name a few. The feedback we received from
the sessions was outstanding --- very relevant
topics for our continued professional development,
especially in these challenging economic
times. All of IFMA's nine core competencies
were covered in this day of learning, and all of
the programs were accredited for CEU/CFM points
--- up to 2 points per session! The sessions
were also accredited for AIA learning
units.
Much of the success for the
event was due to the participation and support by
our Associate members. There were a total of 48
vendor exhibition booths represented.
Between sessions the attendees spent time visiting
the booths, learning about their product or
service offering, as well as bidding on the silent
auction item generously donated by each vendor
company. Retail values of each gift ranged
from $100 - $1000. All of the silent auction
proceeds --- totaling $5400 --- went to the
Chapter's support of GA Tech and the IFMA
Foundation. Thank you for your participation
for making this a successful fundraising
event!
We are very grateful to
our sustaining patrons, without whose support
we would not be able to fund our educational
efforts towards professional development.
Their contributions enabled us to sponsor 12 IFMA
Atlanta members, who are either in transition or
whose companies lacked training funds, to attend
this event. It was very much
appreciated!

Book Launch Party:
Facility
Management Handbook
Submitted by: Joseph Geierman,
CFM
The
Facility Management Handbook has long been the
"go-to" guide for people in our industry.
The second edition of the book, written by David
Cotts, has been a great reference, but has been
quickly becoming outdated, since it was published
in 1999. Thankfully, our very own Kathy
Roper and VA-based Richard Payant have joined
Cotts to update the handbook for a new
century. New chapters focus on the
environment and other "green" FM issues as well as
security concerns in the post 9/11 age.
On September 21, Georgia Tech's building
construction hosted a launch party for the new
book, which was well attended both by IFMA members
and students in Tech's Facility Mangement master's
degree program. We networked, enjoyed a nice
spread, and participated in a seminar led by Roper
and Payant. Coincidentally, the lecture (which was
partly focused on "green" topics) was held in the
Klaus Advanced Computing Building -- one of the
first LEED Gold buildings built in the
SouthEast. A great time was had by
all! The book is available on
Amazon and other major retailers..

"Green, the New Black"
in More Ways than
One
"Green, the New
Black". That line was spotted recently on a
tote bag carried by a local Atlanta
designer. It's true. It's now really
cool to be "going green". Check out any FM
newsletter these days and you will most likely
find an article about "Going Green" or
"Sustainability". But what does that mean to
those of us not aspiring to a LEED certified
project? How can "Going Green" affect the bottom
line? The October luncheon will address those
questions with a panel discussion of experts from
three leading Atlanta companies and how they are
helping their company's bottom line by promoting
sustainable practices. Our distinguished
panel includes Liz York from the Centers for
Disease Control, Ed Brownlee from Turner
Broadcasting System, and Ervan Hancock from
Georgia Power Company. Our moderator will be
Julian Tablada from HOK. Attendees will
learn about sustainable strategies that they can
apply in their own work environments that will
promote policies and culture to operate
economically, environmentally and with socially
responsibility without compromising the bottom
line of the corporation. This program is
accredited under the Quality Assessment &
Innovation competency. Specific objectives
are to learn about innovative sustainable
solutions, learn how to measure the results and
benchmark against those measures.
Liz York is
Chief Sustainability Officer for the CDC. In
this role, Liz works to increase employee and
agency involvement in sustainable practices and
programs. Liz, an architect by training,
serves as a champion and organizational strategist
to ensure widespread implementation of sustainable
practices throughout the CDC community. She
supports sustainable initiatives throughout a
broad range of sectors including food service,
quality of work life, wellness, procurement,
transportation, and facilities. Liz holds a
Bachelor of Science and a Master of Architecture
from Georgia Tech. As a proponent of
sustainable design throughout her career, Liz has
received numerous awards for her work at the
CDC.
Ed Brownlee is the
Vice-President of Facility Operations for Turner
Broadcasting System. Ed
is responsible for Facility Operations for Turner
Broadcasting facilities both domestically and
globally including property management, retail
activities, food services, mail services,
janitorial, and the company's sustainability
efforts. Ed, an active IFMA Atlanta member,
has a BS from the United States Naval Academy and
a MS in Operations Research from the US Naval
Postgraduate School in Monterey Ca. Ed will
share innovative energy and water consumption
strategies in place at TBS as well as recycling
strategies including recycling millions of video
tapes for use in third world
countries.
Ervan
Hancock is the Manager of Renewable & Green
Strategies at Georgia Power Company. Long
time a leader in sustainable strategies, Georgia
Power is in the fore-front of issues like
renewable energy and alternative
transportation. Ervan will share energy
research currently being conducted at Georgia
Power for alternative fuel supplies including the
solar power research project currently being
conducted at the Georgia Power headquarters
building.
Our moderator, Julian
Tablada is Vice President of the Advanced
Workplace Strategies at HOK. Julian has a
bachelor's degree from LSU in Architecture and has
practiced for over 30 years. Julian
specializes in alternative workplace strategies
including sustainable work
solutions.
Please join us on
October 21 at Villa Christina for this
enlightening panel discussion on real life
sustainable practices.
