"Action is the foundational key to all success " ~Pablo Picasso While traveling home from Facility Fusion, IFMA's mid-year conference and leadership forum, I was energized and excited about what I'd learned, who I'd met, and the buzz I continued to hear about our Chapter. Picasso described action as the key to success, which has been the mantra for those of us in the chapter leadership when looking at ways we can benefit the membership. One shining example is Michael Doane, who heads our chapters' Sustainability Committee. Michael has overhauled the committee's goals; focusing on providing sustainability resources and education to chapter members. To do this, his committee began holding more focused and frequent meetings to work towards creating a new web portal. Working closely with VP of Communications, Ken Bryson, and our website designers, this "notebook" of resources portal has begun to take shape as an important resource for chapter members. It will include the following four sections: Education & Career Development - An organized set of links that will direct you to all things Georgia Sustainability-focused High Performance Built Environment Best Practices - A growing set of case studies that identifies best practices in sustainability for Commercial, Industrial, Campus and Institutional buildings. Government Sustainability in Action: Ideas for Commercial Buildings - A section that utilizes what our state government is working on and identifies ways to leverage that knowledge by connecting it to initiatives in the commercial & industrial sectors. Sustainable Products and Services Directory - Highlights sustainable products and services of our Associate members. A secondary goal of the new Sustainability web portal is to promote our chapter throughout the country. We will be providing a template for other chapters about how to gather information about local sustainability, and give them a guideline for how to provide these types of resources to their members in a meaningful way. When members around the country use our model for their web pages, we then have become the catalyst through our action! Nicely dovetailing on what the Sustainability Committee is working on; in March, the chapter's Board of Directors voted to contribute nationally to the advancement of sustainability research. Our chapter will be doing this by sponsoring the IFMA Foundation's white papers on the subject which will contain many practical recommendations that FMs can take at their Facilities - including how to develop a business case and Return on Investment analyses. The guides will be 25-35 pages long and contain numerous charts, tables and sidebars with quotes and links. We expect as many as 12 of these white papers produced and distributed for free to IFMA members over the next year. Finally, chapter leadership has been working on a memorandum of understanding with the Georgia Chapter of the USGBC. This "MOI" will mirror the efforts being worked out between IFMA and the USGBC at the national level. We hope that by establishing a formal commitment to providing shared resources, training classes and member opportunities to network together, leadership from both organizations will be meeting its' member's needs. In all, I continue to be impressed by the resources the Atlanta membership brings to the table to better the FM profession. I'm honored to be your president and look forward to submitting an Awards of Excellence application for Large Chapter of the Year. It is amazing what 505 members have accomplished through action over the past year. -- Christy . |

For the first time in history there are four generations at work at the same time - employees with experiences and viewpoints that span seven decades of American life: · Silent Generation: Born between 1929 - 1945 · Baby Boomers: Born between 1946 - 1964 · Generation X: Born between 1965 - 1978 · Generation Y: Born between 1979 - 1997 Please join us for a lively discussion on the impact these multiple generations are having on the workplace and facilities. Four themes will be covered: Identity, Values, Technology, Mentorship. We will look at the differences and similarities between the generations, especially as they relate to workspace features. FM's are faced with the challenge of balancing these requirements to create a cohesive work environment. By 2020 Generation Y will comprise over 50% of the workforce, while Baby Boomers will decline to 23%. To properly support, attract and retain Gen Y workers, companies will have to provide workspaces and facility programs that align with their needs and preferences. |

Decisions made in Washington , D.C. , are increasingly affecting the built environment. Whether it is the newly announced Better Buildings Initiative energy efficiency, tax incentives for green technologies or the possible implementation of a carbon cap and trade system, now more than ever, the facility management profession needs to make its voice heard in Washington D.C. Be part of the solution at IFMA's Annual Advocacy Day. Read More Here |
Spring Classic Recap
On March 21, IFMA Atlanta held its annual Spring Classic fundraiser at beautiful Lake Lanier Islands. There were 165 attendees - with 104 people playing golf, 16 playing tennis, 7 riding horses, and 57 attending the wine cruise. It was a very successful event, raising over $30,000 (before expenses). Once again, Steve Christopher's passion and support for this event made it a great success. Thanks to all who attended! View more photos of the Spring Classic here. |
New Member and Guest Breakfast Recap Christy Lowell, IFMA Atlanta Membership Chair
The IFMA New Member/Guest Breakfast was held on April 14th at Maggiano's at Perimeter. Once again we decided to hold a catered breakfast since our previous ones were such a success. We had 77 people register for the breakfast, of those 29 New Members and 25 Guests. I am pleased to say we have already had several guests from the breakfast sign up for our Chapter! The event started at 7:30 with networking and breakfast. Christy Jellets, President of the Atlanta Chapter of IFMA, gave a brief presentation on the benefits of being an IFMA member and also on the committees that IFMA has to offer. She encouraged new members to get involved by joining a committee. She explained that by doing so you will build and develop relationships with other members of the Atlanta Chapter of IFMA, therefore getting your Return on Investment. She also placed an emphasis on attending some of our upcoming events including the Spring Classic, Volunteer Day, and Atlanta Workplace. I am extremely happy to announce that membership is at 520 as of April 25, 2011. This is the highest our membership has been in Chapter history!!! Thanks to all of those who attended and helped make this event possible! |

The Georgia Tech Facility Management graduate program announces the offering of our Master of Science degree in Distance Learning format. Students from outside of Atlanta will now have access to the same learning offered on campus beginning in fall 2011. Course work is exactly the same, with Internet access to lectures, lessons, projects and exams.
If your company has locations outside of Atlanta, within Georgia, the U.S. or even internationally, your employees may be interested in this opportunity. Please contact our Graduate Recruiter, Brenda Morris at 404-385-7479 or brenda.morris@coa.gatech.edu for details on how to apply for the distance learning Integrated Facility Management degree. We hope to bring the world into our virtual classroom and expand knowledge of facility management worldwide. The Atlanta Chapter support for this program enables us to continue to expand and grow this program, which is one of only four internationally accredited programs in facility management at the graduate level. Thanks for supporting us and sharing this exciting expansion!
