"Learning is
not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor
and attended to with diligence" Abigail
Adams.
The Atlanta
Chapter of IFMA celebrated its five hundred and
first chapter member at its last luncheon. At that
time, I recognized those in our chapter who
have achieved a professional designation through one of
IFMA's two current credentialing avenues.
For our new members, these CFMs and FMPs
illustrate some of the many opportunities for continuing
education and professional development that are
available through the chapter.
Competency,
establishing benchmarks and setting performance
standards are vital to our global economy. Never before
have public and private sector employers relied on
certifying authorities to set, review and establish
industry standards. Professional associations are now
taking the lead role in the development of credentialing
programs and IFMA's CFM program was one of the first to
be offered in the field, and is still the only
globally recognized certification in facility
management. The Certified Facility
ManagerŪ (CFM) credential sets the industry standard for
ensuring the knowledge and competence of practicing
facility managers.
IFMA's CFM
certification is designed to assess competency in the
field via work experience and education, which are
evaluated by successfully completing a comprehensive
exam. Since the program began in 1992, more than 3,100
facility managers from 32 countries have obtained this
most prestigious recognition.
The CFM Exam
is based on competency. The exam helps to evaluate a
Facility Manager's knowledge of the standards
that define the profession. One cannot take a
course or a simple knowledge-based exam to earn the
credential. IFMA's competency-based program is more than
a knowledge-based program - IFMA's
certification program:
- Assures
professional excellence
- Establishes
standards for global professional practice
- Promotes
the added value of the profession
- Influences
the future direction of the profession
A second
certification is the IFMA's Facility Management
Professional (FMP) designation - a knowledge-based
credential that helps to accelerate a Facility Manager's
transition to the profession. Earning the FMP shows
a certain level of knowledge, and a willingness to
enhance skills. The FMP can gain immediate
credibility with employers, clients and
peers. This credential can be
obtained by taking and passing either classroom
and/or online courses. I have spoken
to more than one chapter member who has said that the
opportunity to earn their credentialing 100% online was
motivating factor for them to pursue the
FMP.
The
last credential IFMA offers is the Sustainable
Facility Professional (SFP) designation, which denotes a
level of expertise in sustainable Facility Management
practices. This new designation will roll out in
the spring. By earning the SFP, FMs
will be recognized as leaders in sustainable initiatives
being undertaken by the organizations they work
for.
The Atlanta
Workplace and Expo, to be held on September
15, 2011 will offer
a day-long educational track designed to help members
achieve SFP certification. I
would encourage you to mark your calendars and plan to
attend this great educational event.
This Chapter
supports a community that fosters vitality, momentum and
impact for the facility management professional and
associate members. We all know that both time
and money can be in short supply, but I encourage you to
ask questions, set personal goals and utilize all that
IFMA provides to advance your career in the field
of facility management.
--
Christy.

at Villa Christina. Mr.Dziak is in his twentieth
year as a telework consultant, author and trainer.
He has successfully assisted public and private
sector clients with the many changes required by
organizations to adopt a virtual work culture.
Michael founded the Metro Atlanta Telecommuting
Advisory Council in 1992 and was a board member of
the International Telework Association Council
(ITAC) for five years. Michael has appeared on
television, radio, print and web media as a

Michael's presentation,
"Leveraging the Emerging Workplace to Win" will
explore the ever changing work place and how
organizations can embrace this change to better
utilize resources, both internal and external. A
successful Telework Program is more than just
providing employees with mobile technology tools.
In addition to the tools, employees and managers
need to be trained to work in a virtual work

of organizations who have successfully implemented
Telework Programs including metrics to measure the
success.

February Luncheon
Recap
by
Merri Anne Pfeffer, CFM
Our
February luncheon at the Cobb Energy Theater was
well attended and greatly received. We had a
couple of very distinguished guest with us this
month: Sheri Knesek, the incoming Houston Chapter
President was in town and able to join us; As well
as former IFMA Chairman, John McGee. Both were
welcomed and we enjoyed their
presence!
Craig Price, of Price Points,
presented a very lively and humorous look at
Negativity and how we can harness it's power to
improve our relations with others and create
success in our every day matters. Negativity is an
unfortunate part of life from complaints,
criticism to dire warnings of doom and gloom.
Craig led us through entertaining examples and
innovative thinking in how to turn failure to
success; get to the truth of a complaint; create
productivity by embracing negative feedback from
others; and how to avoid losing focus by the
continuous negative messages we encounter
daily.
Who knew negativity could be so much
fun! Thank you Craig!

Recap:
Johns
Creek Environmental Campus
Tour
By
Bobby White
On February
10, 2011 the Tours Committee hosted a group of
approximately 20 IFMA members on a tour of the
Johns Creek Environmental Campus (JCEC), a
2010-commissioned Fulton County wastewater
treatment facility. Located on
Holcomb Bridge Road, the JCEC is unique in that it
combines aesthetic beauty and state-of-the-art
technology to create a facility that performs a
vital role for the community, while being a good
neighbor. The structure appears
similar to an old mill complex that may have
resided along the Chattahoochee River in the
1800's - not at all what you'd expect from a
modern wastewater treatment plant.
Our
tour started in the educational facility, which
has a lecture hall, classroom and teaching lab
that allows local students to learn more about our
precious water resources. We
then made our way through the plant operations
with the guidance of the facility's plant
manager. He showed us all 11
processes the plant performs...all the way to
releasing the treated and aerated water into the
Chattahoochee. The released,
treated water is actually cleaner than the water
in the river. We found that the
key differences between this facility and other
wastewater plants are the steps they take to being
a good neighbor in the community:
the JCEC produces no increases in noise
levels, nor does it emit any foul odors into the
air. This tour gave us a true
appreciation of our water supply and the steps we
must all take to keep it clean.
Bobby
White, with Anchor Heating & Air Conditioning,
is a new member of the chapter, and a part of the
Tours Committee.
