developed in response to student interest in health and
medical related facilities. The course fits the goals of
several research groups in the College of Architecture,
focusing on Healthcare spaces and places. Topics
in the new Facility Management graduate course include:

BSC-Balanced
Scorecard- is the name of the IFMA International
and Atlanta Chapter's tracking and planning device
for objectives. This is reviewed and refined
annually and 3 and 5 years in advance.
As
anyone who has set goals knows, if you put your
goals in writing and mentally acknowledge them,
you will be more likely to achieve them. It will
be amazingly accurate.
Sometimes
goals need to be re-set, but this is only because
you had a target set that you were working to meet
and you realized it needed to be amended. The
Atlanta Chapter began working with this BSC
vehicle a few years ago for its goal setting. It
has helped leaders and committee chairs to be more
thoughtful, aware, and focused. The achievements
and successes of our chapter have been enhanced by
this targeted goal setting. It's also helped the
incoming leaders be more aware of the chapter's
strategies, successes, and expectations. The BSC
is posted on the IFMA website for communication to
the members. It's a developing document that is
updated as needed.
As
we proceed into 2012, let's all set our goals for
more targeted achievement; not just in our
Chapter, but in our working and personal lives.
Hopefully, we will all be more successful and
happier!
Let's
make it a memorable year!

Rod
James |
This
month I had the opportunity to interview IFMA
member Rod James - Facilities Manager at Allstate.
Interviewing Rod gave me insight into how
Facilities Managers job responsibilities may
differ depending on the
organization.
Rod
has been an employee at Allstate for 24 years. He
began his career in accounting and managed the
accounting division at Allstate, which included
the property management and telecommunications
departments. When he was promoted, 12 years ago to
manage the entire division he was cross trained to
gain knowledge about the property management role
which enabled him to transition into his current
role as the Facilities Manager. Over the past 10
years the property management role was centralized
to the corporate office in Chicago, which now
includes Facility Managers in several regions.
Around the same time frame all the metro Atlanta
offices were consolidated into one office building
where Allstate leases 5 out of 6 floors, which is
where Rod is housed. READ
