Year's
end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on,
with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.
-Hal Borland
It's
hard to believe that half of the 2010-2011 year is
already behind us and it's time to take a look at our
BSC, goals and measurements and assess where we've come
from and where we want to go from here.
In
May at our Strategic Planning Meeting we updated and
revised the Balanced Score Card to move the chapter
forward another year. The programs and initiatives
that the Atlanta Chapter have already established and
continued through the years are still going strong and
have shown a steady increase in attendance over the last
year. Our monthly programs, FM Networking
Breakfasts, New Member Breakfasts, Sustaining Patron and
Association Reception, Community Service and Non-Profit
Educational offerings remain strong, coupled with the
Chapter's strong Scholarships and IFMA Foundation
support program are the foundation that has made Atlanta
the award-winning chapter that it is.
All
of our efforts of bringing you more value for membership
dollars appear to be bearing fruit. The fact that
in this difficult year our membership counts have
continued to increase by 7% lets us know that our
Chapter is traveling the right path. Our member numbers
are at an all time historic high of 484 members!
As
a result of several focus group meetings instigated by
the Executive Team we have, in the past year,
implemented and continue to improve upon the following
initiatives:
- Adding
a Vice President/Communications position to the
Executive Committee effective the 2010-11 fiscal year;
a Public Relations Coordinator for the chapter for
increased recognition and emphasizing focus on the
facility management role in the industry for the
Atlanta community. To that end, the
Board is in the midst of meetings with BouncePath, our
chosen Public Relations firm, to begin media training
and begin moving forward to fulfill
our mission and make the Atlanta Chapter of IFMA the
premier, focused resource for professional development
and innovative solutions in strategic facility
management. We want IFMA to be the go-to resource for
media when they need experts in the facility
management field for story input.
- Supporting International's
and the Chapter's focus on Sustainability (reducing
the chapter budget by $15,000 to implement an
electronic newsletter, rebranding the chapter logo and
website and winning Newsletter Publishing Chapter
of the Year at World Workplace 2010).
Sustainability continues to be a
priority with LEED Green Associate and AP O+M training
opportunities for members.
- Collaboration
with other built environment organizations such as
CoreNet, AIA and USGBC. Atlanta
Work Place 2009 - will repeat and add other
collaborative organizations for AWP 2010.
We added many new educational opportunities in
the past year that helped to earn us the title of
Professional Development Chapter of the Year at World
Workplace 2010. The subcommittee
for Atlanta Workplace is already working on our
chapters Fall educational and associate expo
event. Look for details in next
months newsletter.
- We've
worked to streamline our Board reporting, track our
volunteer hours and are establishing a map for
succession planning by revamping our Nominating
Committee process.
I
believe with these and other initiatives, we have
charted a path for the long lasting success of the
chapter.
I'm
looking forward to meeting with a team at the end of
January to review the Strategic Plan for
2010-2011. If you receive a call from an executive
committee member, consider giving of your time to assist
in the review process. This is a great way for you
to be part of the chapter's growth.
Additionally, a team is needed to help develop the
long-term strategic planning to carry our Chapter for
the next five years and assure IFMA Atlanta's place as a
leader in the FM industry. With the support of our
members, we look forward to an exciting new era in the
Chapter's history.
I
will close with a personal message, to thank each of you
for your support of me as your leader and friend in
2010. It was a tough year for my family and we are
blessed to have each of you as friends! I hope you
each find happiness, peace, joy and health in the New
Year!
--
Christy.

A
Conversation with Clara Smith IFMA Atlanta VP of
Professional Development
by Chris Sanders
It's a perfect fall afternoon
and I am sitting in my local Starbucks waiting to
meet with Clara. As Clara arrives I feel woefully
underdressed. Clara is dressed in a beautiful
bright blue silk suit that matches the color of
her eyes. Noticeably placed on the label of
Clara's suit are Delta Zeta pins, the reason for
Clara's Saturday formality as she had just come
from her Sorority Founders Brunch. Clara explains
that she has received a National Award for her
support of Delta Zeta. As is revealed in this
interview, the Delta Zeta National Award is not
the only award Clara will receive this
year.

Outward appearances suggest
that strategic facility planning is dead. The
reason is that today, many organizations view
strategic facility planning as capacity planning -
they currently have plenty of vacant space and
don't plan on adding a significant number of new
hires any time soon.
But wait! Now is the
perfect time for facility managers in all types of
organizations (big, small, public and private) to
critically re-evaluate where they are and where
they need to be. Mr. Lynch will discuss how
enterprises are leveraging the strategic facility
planning process to create facility value during
the economic downturn and will incorporate input
from attendees and co-speakers at his World
Workplace roundtable discussion on this topic.

Luncheon
Recap
IFMA
Atlanta's 2010 Awards
Luncheon -Joanne
Cole, Past President

Each
year IFMA Atlanta reserves the December luncheon
program for their Annual Awards of
Excellence. The luncheon is a celebration to
honor chapter members who demonstrate the spirit
of giving year-round by volunteering their time,
talent, services and resources for the betterment
of the Chapter. This year a special program
was planned to highlight the spirit of the holiday
season - that of giving. In the tradition
that he established during the first days of World
War II and continued for more than 60 years, we
were honored to have "Bob Hope" return to
entertain the troops of IFMA Atlanta. We
also enjoyed special performances by "Jack
Benny", "Elvis" and even a special satellite
holiday message from "Alvin and the
Chipmunks".
This
day is also special to the Chapter as we recognize
our community non-profit partners. The
Chapter's Community Service Committee was
established in the mid-1990's and has been
emulated by BOMA, recognized by the United Way,
Atlanta Community Affairs and many other
philanthropic organizations such as the Wesley
Woods Foundation, the Arthur Blank Foundation and
the Campbell Foundation. IFMA Atlanta's 2010
committee supports seven non-profit organizations
through education, facility management and
construction support and in-kind products and
services generously provided by our Chapter
members. Toys, tools and household supplies
were collected from our members for distribution
to this year's partners: Atlanta Community
Toolbank, The Elaine Clark Center
for Exceptional Children, Family Life Restoration
Center, Homestretch, Furniture Bank of Metro
Atlanta, The Drake House, and
Decatur Cooperative
Ministry. Also
at its December awards ceremony, IFMA Atlanta took
the opportunity to pay special recognition
to our corporate Sustaining Patrons. IFMA
Atlanta Sustaining Patrons represent an elite
group of companies and organizations that have
made a powerful statement in support of facility
management. By giving their financial
support to the chapter they support quality
educational luncheons and other educational
events. Early on they provided the resources
necessary to bring IFMA to the table to stand side
by side with other professional associations in
Atlanta. This kind of loyalty and support
from our Sustaining Patron members is the result
of long standing relationship building and is the
core of our Chapter philosophy. Without this
group of companies, many of the professionals in
the room would not be members
today.
The
highlight of the program, however, were the annual awards
given to Chapter members in the following
categories.
The
program's finale was a special rendition of Bob
Hope's theme song - Thanks for the Memory, with a
pictorial recap of the year's many exciting
events.

Special
thanks go out to the following for their
part in making this year's holiday luncheon a
great success:
- Stewart
Smith (Great American Flooring), Harry Ludwig
(King and Spalding) and Brant Bosley (Royal Cup
Coffee) for their sterling performances as Bob
Hope, Jack Benny and Elvis, respectively.
- Ken
Bryson (Atlanta CDC), Joe Perkins (Propeller
Head) and Tammy Weeks (ICS Contract) for their
technology expertise in putting this program
together for us.
- Andrea
Noland (United Stationers) for sponsoring the
certificates and frames for our community
partners and sustaining patrons.
- Ken
Bryson (Atlanta CDC) for his help with all of
the certificates.
- Monte
Townsend (Flood Brothers) and Stewart Smith
(Great American Flooring) for re-writing "Thanks
for the Memory".
- Brady
Gage (Flood Brothers) for our "TV" stage prop.
- Gene
Meany (SunTrust), Dave Woelber (Total-Plant and
Floral), Christy Lowell (Baker Audio), and Derek
Rusch (Dekalb Office) for their respective
appearances in the program
