Luncheon |

As
the Chapter launches its membership drive for 2010, I
thought I would take a look back at my own nearly twenty
years of membership and the benefits and rewards that I
have reaped over the years.
My
initial purpose in joining IFMA was to obtain my
professional designation as a CFM. As a single mother it
was vital to me to be able to market myself in the
business world as a knowledgeable, credentialed
professional, able to bring value-added skills and
expertise to my employer; thereby commanding a better
rate of pay and title. Obtaining my CFM ultimately
resulted in being sought after for the next two
professional moves in my career.
Companies
recognize the CFM designation and in looking to fill an
FM position, come to IFMA first to look for prime
candidates. In the past year IFMA Atlanta has taken
recruitment within the Chapter another step further than
simple resume posting with the FM Job Club. In today's
downward economy, our Chapter members in transition are
able to maximize and leverage their skills and
experience by posting their areas of expertise on the
website and making themselves available for contract
work. While many companies are reducing their work
force, they nevertheless are still in need of FM
services that, while unable to afford full time
employees, do cover contract services. As we all know,
many permanent, full time jobs started out as contract
work. I am a personal testament to this method of
recruitment.
For
those of you who are currently employed, the best
benefit of membership is its opportunities for
continuing education. We all know that we need to
continuously improve our skills and knowledge to remain
marketable. IFMA Atlanta has an objective to provide and
engage Chapter members with opportunities that expand
their professional growth, build business relationships
and advance their career paths. We do so by offering a
myriad of educational experiences, beginning with our
monthly luncheons and education programs; centered on
the core competencies of facility management and
national accreditation for CFM maintenance, as well as
CEU's for organizations like AIA and BOMA. Add to that
the special educational courses offered throughout the
year: Atlanta Work Place, CFM Review, LEED EB-OM Review,
and professional writing, all at very affordable prices
make IFMA the premier, focused group to look for in
continuing education and career development for facility
managers.
With
today's difficult workforce reductions, the importance
of networking cannot be emphasized enough, not only for
professional members but for our associate members as
well. IFMA Atlanta provides what Cheryl Waybright, CFM,
IFMA Fellow calls "...a global extended family of
learning, development and friendship. Our true ROI is
the people we meet, call mentors or friends, or simply,
business acquaintances and the stability derived from
belonging..."
Opportunities
for networking, engagement and exposure are also offered
for those who truly want to be involved through
volunteer service on any of the Chapter's committees.
Your Atlanta Chapter of IFMA currently has 15 committees
and more than 90 active volunteer members. I'd encourage
each of you to consider how you can maximize your
experience by becoming engaged in the Chapter's
activities. You can contact Monte Townsend, monte.townsend@floodbrothers.net,
our chapter Volunteer Coordinator to start the ball
rolling for your involvement.
In
closing, I'll end this month's message with a challenge
to each of you to extend an invitation to a luncheon or
other event to a potential member. We all know someone
who needs to be involved in this premier facility
management professional association.
All
the best, Joanne
Cole, CFM, LEED AP Chapter
President

Community
Corner
The
community service committee has had a wonderful
year. In June, we added two new community partners
and we had two partners depart from the program, having
learned how to successfully manage their facilities
without our ongoing assistance. We would like to
take a moment to recognize the current partners along
with the community service committee members who have
been involved with supporting the partner organizations.
The
two new community partners are:
- Homestretch
with Donna McKinney. They provide housing
assistance, helping homeless families get back on their
feet in North Fulton County. Our thanks to the
committee leads: Emily Perry, Harris Perry and
Associates, and Mike Bowers, Design Weave, for their
leadership of the team in working on conservation goals
and general facility maintenance planning.
-
Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta with Megan
Anderson. They provide essential household
furnishings to previously homeless families and
individuals. Our thanks to committee lead Alan
Jones, Coleman American Moving Services, Inc., and the
team for their help in the assessment and purchase of a
new warehouse space. The non-profits with whom we will
continue our partnership are:
Family
Life Restoration Center with Luther Washington who are
helping families in the Mableton Community get back on
their feet through several different ministries.
Thanks to committee lead Michael Rauth and team, they
have had a phenomenal year renovating the facility and
are working on starting their first facility maintenance
program.
Atlanta
Community Toolbank with Patty Russart and CJ
Clark. The Toolbank provides tools like hammers,
rakes and shovels for use in community service projects
to other community supportive organizations.
Thanks to committee leads Andy Hoover, The Best
Consultant, and Patricia Darroch, Verizon, as they
helped the Toolbank with assessing how best to organize
their current warehouse and develop their preventative
maintenance plans.
Elaine
Clark Center for Exceptional Children with Beth
Schmeling, who provides an innovative model of education
and therapeutic play in a loving and safe environment
for all children, regardless of abilities. Thanks
to leads Barbara Miller, Akzo Noble, Valerie Delgado,
Atlanta Flooring Design, and Alan Jones, Coleman
American Moving Services, Inc. for their assistance with
the Elaine Clark Center. The center took on a
aggressive plan to undergo some renovations continued to
serve its children. The renovation prepared the
center to serve twice as many children as
before.
We
honored all of these great organizations at the December
luncheon, for they have worked hard to obtain the goals
set last July.
In
order to support the above partners, the community
service committee has been hard at work on programs and
process improvements.we held our IFMA Volunteer Day,
partnering with Atlanta Community Toolbank to spruce up
homes in the community and organize their warehouse
space. We also created new report forms to assist
in tracking the progress that is being made by our
partners on their facility maintenance. And
finally, the committee held the annual Non-Profit Summit
as well as quarterly Lunch and Learns that allowed our
partner organizations and other non-profits an
opportunity to learn additional facility maintenance
methods and tools.
We
are excited about the challenges that are to come in
2010 and look forward to further servicing the
community. Please feel free to contact Dave

Did
you realize that Facility Managers are now listed as the
11th fastest growing salary position,
according to a recent CareerBuilder listing
(http://www.miniurl.com/25432).
We just missed the "top ten" list which reflects that
five of the ten are in the medical field.
One
way to maximize your career and salary potential is to
obtain the Master of Science in Integrated Facility
Management from Georgia Tech. With an advanced
degree, you will be at the top of the resume' pile as
Facility Management takes off with growth and increased
recognition, prestige and salary opportunities.
Job growth may be slow for the next year or two, but
that allows you time to complete your degree in our
all-evening courses over the next year or so. To
learn more about courses in Integrated Facility
Management contact kathy.roper@gatech.edu
For
more information on the application process or to visit
the campus for a tour, contact Brenda Morris at

Luncheon Recap
The
Introverted Leader | Building
on your Quiet Strength
Seminar
by Dr.
Jennifer Kahnweiler, Ph.D IFMA
Atlanta kicked off the new year with a
power packed and informative luncheon at the Cobb
Energy Center. Dr. Jennifer Kahnweiler presented
her new book The Introverted Leader to a filled
room of introverts and extroverts alike. Through
research, personal experience and client
evaluations Dr. Kahnweiler provided the attendees
with insight into the introverted leader's mind
and behavior.
Once the picture of an
introvert was established and defined, Dr.
Kahnweiler enlightened the audience with a list of
daily challenges faced by introverts. From people
exhaustion to negative body and facial expression
we learned that introverts have it tough out there
in an extroverted world. One exercise that brought
this to light was the act of stating your
accomplishment and then talking about it with the
person seated next to you. With audience
participation, it was made clear, that for an
introvert this exercise was both difficult and
uncomfortable.
With the challenges
defined, Dr. Kahnweiler moved into the skills that
can turn an introvert into a powerful leader
without compromising their inherent positive
traits. By using what is outlined in her book as,
The 4P's: Prepare, Presence, Push and Practice,
introverts can build on their skills to become the
leaders they were born to be.
The programs
committee would like to thank Dr. Kahnweiler for
her informative and entertaining lecture. With
special thanks to Lynn Schneider, Pam Essler and
Chris Torchia for their help and participation
with this program.

Facility
Managers Get SMaRT at January Sustainability
Breakfast
On January
26, a group of thirteen professional facility
managers gathered at the Knoll showroom in
Atlanta's Westside district to learn about the
Greenguard and SMaRT product rating systems, for
another IFMA Atlanta sustainability
breakfast. The presentation was extremely
informative, allowing those in attendance to learn
about these two ratings systems that have been
established to help designers and Facility
Managers choose sustainable products that have
been verified by a third-party
agency.
In
addition to the presentations on Greenguard and
SMaRT, the breakfast also included a tour of the
new Knoll facility, which was awarded LEED-Gold
for Constructive Interiors. It is a
beautiful space in a converted slaughterhouse, and
worth checking out. Thanks to Knoll for the
chance to learn and network!

Get
Certified!
In
any career, it's important to set yourself apart
from the pack. In Facility Management, one
way to do that is to become a Certified Facility
Manager (CFM). In a challenging job market,
those three letters after your name can make the
difference between landing a job and missing it by
"that much."
In
February, IFMA's Atlanta chapter is going to be
holding weekly study sessions for professionals
who want to get their CFM. Over the course
of nine weeks, they will study each of the nine
core competencies that the CFM exam covers.
To get the full value out of these study sessions,
you will need copies of IFMA's CFM Exam Review
Course Study Set, which are available from the
IFMA website. If you attended one of the
review courses for the CFM Exam that IFMA has
hosted over the past few years, you should already
have these books.
Each
week, the study sessions will be held at the
Westminster School in Atlanta and led by a
different CFM. Here is the current
schedule:
·
2/9/2010
- Real Estate (led by Ed
Rondeau)
·
2/16/2010
- Communications (led by Lindsey
Bradshaw)
·
2/23/2010
- Finance (led by Keith Mathison)
·
3/2/2010
- Human and Environmental Factors (led by Joseph

·
3/9/2010

Background:
The
Academy of Medicine in Midtown Atlanta,
Georgia was built in 1941 and housed the Medical
Association of Atlanta until the 1970s. The
Academy was designed by the Atlanta architecture
firm of Hentz, Adler and Shutze, with R. Kennon
Perry the project architect and Philip Trammell
Shutze the supervising principal. The building was
intended as a meeting place for Atlanta
physicians. Shutze's austerely classical design is
reminiscent of the work of John Soane and Benjamin
Latrobe.
By
the 1970s the building had fallen into disrepair.
The building was renovated in 1983 and is used by
the public as well as the medical
profession. In 2008, Atlanta Medical
Heritage, Inc. donated the Academy of Medicine to
the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc. due to lack of
resources to maintain the facility.
The
Academy offers its clients an unparalleled
opportunity to host functions in one of the most
beautiful and historic settings in the city. The
Academy is on the National Register of Historic
Places. It offers its clients the old-world
elegance and style of days gone by, right in the
heart of midtown Atlanta. The Academy has
played host to some of Atlanta's most prestigious
and glamorous affairs. The facility has the
original crystal chandelier from the movie set of
"Gone with the Wind" in the rotunda.
In
July 2010 the facility will close to undergo a $5
million major 18-month restoration process.
The restoration is scheduled for completion in
2012. Don't miss the chance to experience a
"before" tour of this historical
building. |
