The
very essence of leadership is that you have to have
vision. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet- Theodore M.
Hesburgh
It
seems as if it were just weeks ago that Past President
Joanne Cole (Centers for Disease Control) and I sat in a
small room in the Orlando convention center, pitching
the idea of how the Atlanta Chapter of IFMA and its
members were ready to partner with IFMA Headquarters to
support World Workplace 2010. We had heard from our
Orlando Chapter tales of how difficult it was to recruit
volunteers and how challenging it would be to be
successful at this venture. In the initial
meetings, there were contracts to negotiate and
discussion on fun stuff like advertising, booth space,
banners, and discounted rates for early registration.
Even then, though, we were overwhelmed with excitement
about being part of the 30th Anniversary
celebration and knew that our chapter's membership were
up to the challenge of making the event a huge
success. .
And
you didn't disappoint! Twenty-four associate
members stepped up and sold out the Peachtree Street
exposition aisle in record timing with coordination by
Gene Meaney (Suntrust). A dozen or so volunteers,
each with sub-committee support, met bi-weekly under the
leadership of Tammy Roberts (Dekalb Office) to
coordinate the logistics all the details from the
Atlanta Central Booth project with tvsdesign and SCAD,
Chapter shirts, the BINGO foundation incentive game,
giveways, and chapter hospitality. Hours of work,
struggles to compromise to ensure member needs were met,
produced the most successful World Workplace event in
its' history. To ensure there were opportunities
for any member to participate Candice Kearney (Habitat
for Humanity) oversaw several hundred hours of volunteer
posts. From welcoming participations at the
information booth, to celebrating the opening of the
EXPO floor, supporting the IFMA Foundation with your
time, presence and your financial gifts, to working at
Atlanta Central to cleaning up after each event, members
of this chapter worked collectively to create a seamless
experience for the attendees.
During
the past year, Meaghan Baker (IHG) and Clara Smith (CMS
Enterprises), chair of the Newsletter and VP of
the Professional Development committees
respectively, both dedicated much time and effort -
and produced award-winning results. The Atlanta Chapter
of IFMA won both the Newsletter Award and Professional
Development Award and were recognized at the Awards of
Excellence dinner. New to our chapter, but not to
IFMA, Derek Rusch (Dekalb Office) was recognized for his
contributions to the IFMA Foundation.
Linda
Edgecombe, author of Shift or Get off the Pot: 26
Simple Truths About Getting a Life asked the early morning
audience in last Friday's session, "When was the last
time you did something for the first time?" For me, his
week has been a seven days of "firsts." I attended a
cocktail party on Monday night that provided me with an
opportunity to discuss the IFMA Foundation challenges
and opportunities. I was able to visit and thank
Linda Beverly; for everything she has offered the
Atlanta Chapter upon her retirement. And the
highlight of the World Workplace 2010? For me it
was walking George and Doris Graves into the Welcome
Reception at the Georgia Aquarium on Wednesday
night. Just being hand-in-hand with the founder of
IFMA and celebrating the 30th Anniversary of
his vision was amazing!
What
firsts did you experience?
Are
you seeing your career in a new way today?
Linda
Edgecombe also suggested we ask ourselves, "How old are
your stories?" For me (and I hope for many of you)
our stories and professional connections are
fresh. It was exciting -- no thrilling -- to be a
part of the Atlanta Chapter at this time in IFMA's
history. I congratulate each of you for your
continued career growth and for your choice to make IFMA
a vehicle for your success.
To
all our members, exhibitors and sponsors, thank
you! IFMA Atlanta ... you make me proud to be your
President.

Special Shout-Out to Our Atlanta World Work Place
Sponsors and Steering Committee
Volunteers
by
Tammy Roberts

I'd like to take a moment
to thank the sponsors of our chapter's booth
at Atlanta World Work Place.....thank you
all for your generous contribution. Our
booth sponsors included:
- Choate
- Corporate
Environments
- Cort
- CWC
- DeKalb
Office
- Humphries
and Company
- Knoll
- The
Mohawk Group
- SCAD
- Steelcase

- tvsdesign
Our
booth put the Atlanta IFMA Chapter on the map.
SCAD students, under the direction of
Professor Barri Culpepper, were very excited to see
their final design become a reality.
Nancy Cartledge, Matthew
Hayner and
Ziv Chan of
tvsdesign contributed a tremendous amount of time
to ensure education would be part of the Atlanta
IFMA Chapters booth. Their leadership and
direction was commendable. Peter
Wittkop of Humphries
worked endless hours to ensure the booth would be
constructed properly and on time. We are
greatly for his dedication and
contribution.
I'd
also like to extend a round of applause to
all of our hospitality sponsors. These
sponsors were:
- Executive Management Services, Inc
- Flood Brothers
- Mayberry Electric
- milliCare
- Munters
- RENTACRATE

We
appreciate the venues they provided for relaxing
and networking with fellow IFMA friends. The
OMNI and STATS parties made for perfect ends to
our busy World WorkPlace days.
Finally,
I'd like to thank our Steering Committee

- Joanne Cole - who was indispensible...
helping with the Bingo Cards, Flashlights,

did coordinating the award banquet tickets. It
was great having the Atlanta Group all together.
- Gene Meaney - Peachtree Street was a hit
thanks to you.
- Candace Kearney - we couldn't have asked for
a better person to coordinate the many
volunteers needed to make WWP2010 a huge
success. Kudos to you.
- Monte Townsend - if it weren't for your
fantastic skit at the monthly meeting and help
with the OMNI we would not have had such a great
turn out. Thank you.

was stellar and your input throughout the entire
process was invaluable. We appreciate all you
did.
- Jeff Dellamggiora - Thanks for your valuable

Rainwater
Harvesting - A Case Study by Annette
Gorelick
Annette Gorelick, an
active member of our chapter, recently
published this article about rainwater
harvesting in Green Building Pro.
While the debate abounds
concerning the effects of global climate change,
deforestation and increasing world population, one
thing is clear. Water is a precious resource.
Whether a necessity, honorable stewardship of the
planet's natural resources, or just good business
sense; the efficient use of water is an
environmental initiative worth the challenge.
Individuals and businesses that take voluntary
steps to plan and implement water saving projects
are differentiating themselves as socially
responsible and economically savvy...

IFMA Advocacy Forum in Washington DC
by
Dan Walther, IFMA Atlanta Education
Committee

It
was a great opportunity to represent our Atlanta
Chapter at the Advocacy Forum on September 22.
Later that day, there were two meetings set up for
me-- one was to talk with an assistant to Tom
Price (Republican), Representative of
Georgia's 6th Congressional
District in the United States House of
Representatives since 2005, and the second meeting
was to speak with an assistant to Senator Saxby
Chambliss (R-GA). 2nd term Republican
from Georgia.
The
whole experience was phenomenal--to be in the
Capitol building in the morning for the Public
Policy Forum, and then to the House and on to the
Senate (structural veins of this great democratic
nation), were truly eye opening, impressive, and
inspiring moments.
As
I waited outside Senator Saxby Chambliss' office
to express our thanks for their support of the
Bill (it passed the Senate with flying colors) and
to share some insights to our wide scope of
responsibilities for the built environment, who
goes walking right past me but the one and only
U.S. Senator John
McCain (R-AZ).
As
my plane built up speed to take off from the
Reagan International Airport runway, I reflected
on the days events--having involvement in our
Capitol for a Bill that affects our industry was a
real gift and I hope each one of our members has
this same opportunity some day.
Until
then, please check our website for
upcoming announcements and links to our local
advocacy efforts.

New
Member Breakfast Recap: The
Buckhead Club
-
Christy
Lowell

The
event started at 7:30 with networking and
breakfast. Christy Jellets, IFMA Atlanta
President, gave a brief presentation on the
benefits of being an IFMA member and also on the
committees that IFMA has to offer. She
encouraged new members to get involved by joining
a committee. She explained that by doing so you
will build and develop relationships with other
members of the IFMA Atlanta Chapter, therefore
getting your Return on Investment. She also
placed an emphasis on attending World Workplace
and the events our Chapter is planning during the
Convention.
I
am extremely happy to announce that membership is
at 468 as of October 20, 2010. This is
the highest our membership has been in Chapter
history!!! Thanks to all of those who
attended and helped make this event
possible!
The
IFMA New Member/Guest Breakfast was held on
October 14th at The Buckhead
Club. Once again we decided to do a catered
breakfast, since the last one was such a success.
We had 63 people in attendance. Of those, 23
of were guests and 21 were new members. I am
pleased to say we have already had several guests
from the breakfast join our
Chapter! |
Sustainability Breakfast
Recap: The
Westminster School
-
Joseph Geierman, CFM,
FMP

Early
in October members of the IFMA Atlanta Chapter
visited the Westminster School to learn about an
energy and water audit they recently conducted
which had a potential cost savings of
$200,000. About $150,000 of these savings
have a 2-year payback!
Professional
members who attended learned the importance of
energy and water audits in establishing
benchmarks, goals & action plans. Jean
Pullen, the consultant who conducted the audit,
led the presentation. Much thanks to William
Broome, CFM -- Facility Manager at the Westminster
School - for hosting us!
