"Social media is just a buzzword
until you come up with a plan."
-
Unknown
Recently,
I have been captivated by social media - looking for
ways to use it beyond communicating with old friends or
to my college student. With advances in technology
changing our lives everyday, I think it is worth our
time to take a look at how we can use the technology
available to us to benefit our facilities and the groups
that we serve - from Facebook to Twitter, I hope IFMA
helps you maximize your internet
experience.
Facebook
is a huge social network, and an important way for IFMA
to reach its members. The international
organization's Facebook group is active and growing -
with more than 1,150 online members! It features
many useful articles and is a great way for IFMA members
to meet each other from the comfort of their
homes! Our own Atlanta chapter also has an active
Facebook presence, with about 75 online members, and
links to not just our events, but also educational
articles and stories of interest to FMs. You may
be actively involved in IFMA, but how many of you have
taken it to the next level? I'm challenging all of
you reading this to become a fan and connect with
us on Facebook. Please share
articles and other information that will be useful to
the profession.
LinkedIn
is another important social network where IFMA has a
strong presence. Our parent group has a very
active group on LinkedIn with more than 5000
members. There are several message boards and
sub-groups dedicated to specific interests and councils
within the organization. The national LinkedIn
group is a great way to meet other professionals and
associates within IFMA, to ask questions and get truly
helpful answers. On a smaller scale, the Atlanta
chapter has formed its own LinkedIn group
and already has nearly 90 members. There are
numerous conversations on the site about upcoming events
and also questions asked by local chapter members with
good responses from other members of the chapter.
Harriet Whelihan, our Chapter Credentialing Chair,
has formed a sub-group within our chapter's LinkedIn
page for discussion of issues relevant to professional
credentialing - from the difference between the CFM and
the FMP professional designation to starting a CFM
focused Book Club.
Because
we know how important social media is becoming in the
lives of our members, the chapter's board recently added
a new position - VP of Communications. This new
role, filled by KenBryson, oversees all aspects of how
the chapter communicates with and connects to its
members. Later this month, you will see the fruits of
Ken's first big project: a redesign of the Atlanta
Chapter's website - featuring a much more streamlined
layout, and a better integration with our
regularly-updated chapter blog. We
hope you check it out soon and give us feedback about
what you like, or think we should change. Also, if
you're interested in being a guest-blogger, or getting
involved with the communications committee - please
contact KenBryson or JosephGeierman for more
information!
I
cannot stress highly enough the value to your business
of establishing personal relationships within IFMA's
membership - both locally and internationally. I
think all business is built on relationships and social
media is making it easier to form those relationships
online. And stay tuned
to our newsletter for upcoming news on a Social Media
Workshop to be hosted by our Emerging Leaders. It
will be an opportunity to learn from young professionals
and students who are experts at making social media work
for them.
In
closing, I would like to hope I've encouraged some of
you to consider alternative ways of establishing
relationship through the chapter and in your
profession. So now the question becomes, "what you
your plan for using social media to your business
advantage"? Christy

With
World Workplace coming to Atlanta in October 2010, the
Georgia Tech Facility Management graduate program would
like to have a big impact. Along with a booth in
the expo, students attending the Education Reception to
receive scholarships, and general attendance at the
conference, we hope to have students and IFMA Atlanta
Chapter supporters of the GT program prominently
greeting visitors and sharing information about our
program. Plans are underway, but will not be
finalized until later this
summer. If you can help out by
manning the GT program booth # 641 in the Expo for an
hour, or would like to take part in helping to promote
our program during World Workplace, please contact
Professor Professor Kathy Roper at 404-385-4139 or kathy.roper@gatech.edu.
or Brenda Morris at 404-385-7479 or brenda.morris@coa.gatech.edu. This
should be a wonderful (perhaps one-time) opportunity to
greet potential students in our hometown.

Corp), Waylon Smith (Remco

Please
join us for a program and panel discussion that
explores the challenges that face facility
managers when the unexpected can be a recipe for
disaster. Many businesses each year experience
damage to their buildings which can be
operationally and financially devastating,
especially if there is not a Disaster Recovery
Plan in place. The program will focus on emergency
preparedness and business continuity issues as
well as the disaster recovery phase. When disaster
does strike, it is essential to take immediate
action to mitigate the damage. Our panelists are
all veterans of the emergency response and
recovery industry and will be sharing specific
experiences and case studies that highlight the
need to have a Disaster Recovery Plan in place
before disaster
strikes.
Learning
Objectives include:
- Understanding
the need for a Disaster Recovery plan and what
types of emergencies you can expect. How this
plan can reduce your company's level of risk,
both internal and external.
- Establishing
roles for your team in unexpected circumstances,
including emergency preparedness training.
- Technical
knowledge and information about mold damage
remediation, water and fire restoration and
working with hazardous
materials.
Jeff
Jellets
is the territorial disaster coordinator for The
Salvation Army's Southern Headquarters, based out
of Atlanta, GA. As the territorial disaster
coordinator, Mr. Jellets is responsible
coordinating support to Salvation Army units
within these states during a major emergency and
providing technical guidance during disaster
preparedness, response and recovery.
Tom McGuire has over
20 years of experience in the disaster recovery
field and has published a number of related
articles. His specific expertise is in the
recovery and restoration of structures and
documents related to disasters such as hurricanes,
floods, tornadoes and fires. He is currently
employed by Munters
Corporation.
Waylon Smith
founded Remco Solutions over 8 years ago.
Since then, the company has completed thousands of
restoration projects in the residential and
commercial market. Waylon is passionate
about providing education to professions in the
insurance and property management industry.

and Mike Snyder from Richard Wittschiebe Hand

September IFMA chapter meeting will be held on

of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating,
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers)
which received LEED Platnium certification in late

organization which has 50,000 members globally.
Founded in 1894, ASHRAE's mission is to advance
the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity
and promote a sustainable world. With this mission
in mind, it made sense that renovation of the
headquarters building should attain LEED
certification. This meeting, presented by Jeff
Littleton, Executive VP and Secretary of ASHRAE

from Richard Wittschiebe Hand will present a case
study of the renovation project with a tour after

July
Luncheon Recap
The
luncheon at SCAD began with a wonderful overview
of SCAD's campuses and available arts
programs. Everyone enjoyed this unique
setting for the IFMA monthly luncheon. A few
of the IFMA board members entertained the sold-out
crowd with a skit reminding us of the upcoming
IFMA World Workplace in Atlanta, Oct. 27th - 29th,
2010 at the Georgia World Congress
Center.
Tracy Wymer and Dr. Mike
O'Neill from Knoll presented their latest
research study: Implementing Design
for Integrated Work. The program
explored the complexity of changing work styles
and diversity of workspace solutions.
Multiple work modes and the flow of work
between those modes are driving this change to the
Integrated Workplace. Research shows that
companies who implement these integrated
work styles, report improved business performance
and increased employee satisfaction.
For additional information on
this study and other Knoll research topics, please

The
Making of a President Bio
of Christy Jellets, IFMA Atlanta President
2010/11 by
Chris Sanders

It's
Friday around 12:30pm and typical for a Facilities
Manager's schedule; Christy Jellets and I are
meeting at a Starbucks to conduct this interview.
By typical I mean we had to reschedule several
times and finally resorted to a spontaneous
meeting in between work-related appointments. Many
of you may know Christy from her years of
volunteer time spent with IFMA or from her
dedication to community service. Some IFMA members
reading this will only know that Christy is our
new chapter president. What you will learn from
this interview is the depth of Christy Jellets'
passion for the Facilities Management profession
and her dedication to making her mark on IFMA and
its members...
