"The
purpose of life is not to be happy - but to matter, to
be productive, to be useful, to have it make some
difference that you have lived at all." ~Leo
Rosten
I first
heard the statement above many years ago, and it is a
driving force in my life. It has gotten me through
adversity and has allowed me to have a smile and
satisfaction knowing I have made a difference in this
world. I genuinely love helping others-especially
people in our profession.
Thursday,
April 21th is the Annual Golf Classic to be
held at the Legacy on Lanier Golf Club. I look forward
to relaxing, recreating and renewing connections.
Some consider this to be a one-day networking
opportunity to take clients and potential new members
out to meet with current members and to bring in new
business and seal contracts. Others view it as a
day to show the boss a good time at the "lake".
This year, SteveChristopher and team
have several "special guests" (football and baseball
greats), who will make the day even more special with
autographs, pictures and more. The Golf Classic is
the chapter's annual fundraiser, allowing us to donate
10% of our operating dollars to the
profession.
I challenge
each of you to participate. This participation and
support is one way that you can "give back" to Facility
Management.
The money
raised will support the IFMA Foundation with a $10,000
donation at this October's World Work Place in
Phoenix,
AZ. It
will also allow us to sponsor a white paper on
Sustainability Research and Resources. This paper,
in conjunction with an upcoming makeover of the
Sustainability section of our chapter's website, will
certainly make the IFMA Atlanta stand out as a champion
of the sustainability movement and will benefit each of
you in your workplace.
On a global
level, the money that we give to the IFMA Foundation
helps to enhance and grow the Facility Management
profession in the following ways:
1.
The
Foundation provides scholarships to students and grants
to organizations that are helping to further the FM
profession. Chapters throughout the country have
generously donated to the Foundation to make this
happen. The Atlanta Chapter continues to support
the scholarship program with funding as well as its
members' time taken to rate and review each award
application.
2.
The IFMA
Foundation publishes the International Journal of
Facility Management (IJFM), which is an open source,
internet accessible journal devoted to the science,
technology and practice of facility management.
The journal serves to educate practitioners and
students, and also provides an outlet and motivation for
researchers to begin new research and collaborate with
allied professionals. The IJFM also serves to advance
the research agenda and professionalism of the entire
field of FM. As more research is established, the
professionalism of the industry is enhanced, creating a
further need for research and researchers. Thus
promoting more growth to academics within facility
management and prepare better practitioners thus by
furthering the advancement in the industry (www.ijfm.net).
The money
that is given to the IFMA Foundation supports the
Accredited Degree Program, an initiative that was
designed to recognize and encourage strengthening of
current facility management degrees and to assist in the
development of new FM degree programs throughout the
world. There are currently thirteen accredited
degree programs worldwide and we are proud to be
included through our partnership with GeorgiaTech as one of
those programs. This Chapter worked to create the
program at GeorgiaTech and you
continue to support an annual donation of $10K to fund
the chair's position via a grant. It is our goal as
a chapter to provide funding to support the GeorgiaTech and its FM
Masters Degree program. We want to be able to
maintain what we started for future generations of
FMer's.
Your
"one-day" at the Spring Classic will support "everyday"
actions that will improve the FM profession. So
when a volunteer calls to ask you to participate at our
annual Golf Classic, I would remind you that not only
are you going to have a wonderful time, but the money
you give will help our Chapter, the IFMA Foundation,
IFMA International and the entire industry. If you
are unable to make it to the Golf Classic, consider
adding a donation when you renew your membership by
checking the appropriate box. It is an easy way to
give directly to the IFMA Foundation.
I hope each
of you are inspired by my actions and the actions of
your Chapter. I thank you for all the support you
have offered in the past and continue to offer in the
future. I look forward to seeing each of you at
Lake Lanier
--
Christy.

Tech Corner
The
Georgia Tech Facility Management graduate program
announces the offering of our Master of Science degree
in Distance Learning format. Students from outside of
Atlanta will now have access to the same learning
offered on campus beginning in fall 2011. Course work is
exactly the same, with Internet access to lectures,
lessons, projects and exams.
If your company has
locations outside of Atlanta, within Georgia, the U.S.
or even internationally, your employees may be
interested in this opportunity. Please contact our
Graduate Recruiter, Brenda Morris at 404-385-7479 or brenda.morris@coa.gatech.edu for
details on how to apply for the distance learning
Integrated Facility Management degree. We hope to bring
the world into our virtual classroom and expand
knowledge of facility management worldwide. The Atlanta
Chapter support for this program enables us to continue
to expand and grow this program, which is one of only
four internationally accredited programs in facility
management at the graduate level. Thanks for supporting
us and sharing this exciting expansion!

IFMA Spring Classic -
It's almost here!
Golf, horses, tennis, boats, wine and now...NFL
players! IFMA Atlanta is hosting the 2011 Spring
Classic on Thursday, April 21st at Lake Lanier
Islands. We are excited to announce that we will
have some past and current NFL players who started
their careers right here in Georgia and the
SEC/ACC conferences. They will be available to
sign autographs and take pictures on the day of
the event as well as play golf with a certain
lucky foursome (details below). Here is the list
we have so far...
- Robert Edwards (UGA
& Patriots/Dolphins running back)
- Takeo Spikes (Auburn
& Bills/49ers All-Pro linebacker)
- Randall Godfrey (UGA
All American & Cowboys/Chargers linebacker)
- John Davis (Georgia
Tech All American & Bills Super Bowl
lineman)
- Jamal Lewis (Georgia
Tech All ACC & Las Vegas Locomotives UFL
World Champ safety)
We hope to add other players and even
Hines Ward, but his participation in "Dancing with
the Stars" might hold him back...we guess that is
a good excuse. Stay tuned on any
additions! As a trade off for their participation,
we are allowing them set up a table and
information about their upcoming Star Training
Academy football camps in the Atlanta area. Visit
their website www.all-americanresources.com to
learn more.
If you sign up two golf teams, you will
only have to pay for 7 people. You can then pick
your 8th player from the list of football stars!
This is available on a first-come first-serve
basis.
We still need items for the door
prizes/raffle drawing or any "goodie bag
stuffers". Your support will be recognized and
these can really help make the Spring Classic a
lot of fun. Please contact bbosley@royalcupcoffee.com if
you would like to contribute.
Now is the time to go to the Web site and
sign up for this
event. Remember, if you sign up before April 1st,
there are some great discounts. It is the largest
fund-raising event of the year and your support is
needed. What a great way to enjoy a great day at
Lake Lanier and network with your IFMA friends or
your largest customer. We hope to see you
there!!!!! |

IFMA Atlanta Tour of
Chik-Fil-A HQ
Please join us on Tuesday, May
3 at 3pm for an IFMA Atlanta sponsored
tour of Georgia's own Chick-fil-A. Located south
of the airport, Chick-fil-A's corporate
headquarters is a world class facility. We will
have a Facility Manager's perspective on the tour
as we visit the new training center, the
TruettCathy automobile collection and the rest of
the corporate facility that makes this company so
great. Chik-Fil-A's Headquarters is located at
5200 Buffington Road in Atlanta, 30349.
About
Chick-fil-A
It all started in 1946, when
TruettCathy opened his first restaurant, The Dwarf
Grill, in Hapeville, Georgia. Credited with
inventing Chick-fil-A's boneless breast of chicken
sandwich, Mr.Cathy founded Chick-fil-A, Inc. in
the early 1960s and pioneered the establishment of
restaurants in shopping malls with the opening of
the first Chick-fil-A Restaurant at a mall in
suburban Atlanta in 1967. Since then, Chick-fil-A
has steadily grown to become the second largest
quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the
United States, with over 1,500 locations in 39
states and Washington, D.C. In 2010, annual sales
were over $3.5 billion. Chick-fil-A is still
privately held and family owned.

March Luncheon
Recap
by
Jenai Taylor
On
Wednesday, March 16th, Michael Dziak, COO of
e.Work.com,
Inc., presented to the Atlanta IFMA Chapter on the
evolving workplace and how telework is
becoming the norm in most organizations. He
engaged the audience to think about
our own remote work habits, which relates to the
larger emerging workplace pattern of employees using
mobile/portable technology to work from home, or
other locations outside the office.
Mr. Dziak also focused on
the importance of training in order to have a
successful telework strategy. He
reviewed several case studies which
demonstrated how different types of companies,
each with unique challenges, successfully implemented
telework programs. Mr. Dziak concluded his
discussion by recommending a book,
The 2020
Workplace: How Innovative Companies Attract,
Develop and Keep Tomorrow's Employees
Today.
