The topic of the fall quarter IFMA Atlanta Lunch and Learn for Nonprofits, held on November 17 at Georgia Lions Lighthouse, was Getting Discounts Using Nonprofit Procurement Vehicles.  David Kidd, Program Manager with U. S. Communities, a government purchasing alliance that assists public agencies and non-profits to save time and money in the procurement process, discussed how to access a no-cost, no-commitment contract established on behalf of all public agencies with the full buying power of all the U.S. Communities contracts behind it.  Nonprofits may register on line at www.uscommunities.org or contact David Kidd at dkidd@uscommunities.org.

February 10, 2011 the IFMA Atlanta Community Service Committee held its 4th Annual Facility Summit for Non Profits. The event was a huge success again this year thanks to Renee Bonnell (Chosen Enterprise) Dave Woelber (Total Plant and Floral) Diane Adams (ART and Associates) Emily Perry (Harris Perry Interior Design) and CJ Clark (Atlanta Community ToolBank). A special thanks to the Atlanta Community Foodbank for hosting the event and providing a tour of their LEED facility.

What is the Facility Summit? It all started 4 years ago when the Community Service Committee decided that there was a lot more out reach that could be done beyond the few partnering organizations we served at that time. We found too many non profits work in reaction to their facilities and would benefit from being pro active (advancing the profession of facility maintenance).

The focus of the Summit has been introducing non profit organizations to a preventative maintenance manual. Every year we provide new attendees with information on how to start the development of their own manual. It is a one day educational event that provides topical presentations/discussions about the exterior and interior maintenance envelopes. (ie. Roofing – emergency planning – flooring – grants for facilities – air quality – landscaping – energy efficiency – phone and i.t. –hvac – 5s – plumbing – just to name a few)

This event kicks off our quarterly lunch and learns which are for our non profit partners and open to other non profit agencies. If you know of any non profits who own their own facility and would benefit from learning how to manage them. Please direct them to the IFMA Atlanta Website or the committee chair (Dave Woelber) – (2011 Lunch and Learn Dates – May 19 – August 25 and November 17)

Finally a special thanks to our 2011 speakers as they gave of their time and voices to provide valuable information:

Christy Jellets (Atlanta Botanical Garden) Jan Legg (Architect and Decatur Cooperative Ministry Board Member) Paul Bates (Greenguard Enviromental Institute) Michael Doane (Ecolnsights) Jeff Jellets (The Salvation Army) Brookelyn Bacon & Dustin Priester (RooterPlus) Rob Johnson (Atlanta Community Foodbank) Dan Rhodes (Bonitz Environmental Technologies) Darrell Rodgers (Emerald Data Network, Inc) Kimberly Hays deMuga (Atlanta Community Foodbank) Amanda Gray (City of Alpharetta) Barbara Miller (Akzo Nobel Coating)

On the morning of February 18th, IFMA Atlanta sustaining patron, TrilogyFM/Millicare was recognized by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of the city’s “Healthiest Employers.”  A number of chapter members were there to recognize the achievement.

We congratulate Tom Haslach and the whole TrilogyFM team for a job well-done!  You can see pictures of the event here.

Life’s greatest moments are often borne from power partnerships. Think Rice and Montana. Lennon and McCartney. Hewlett and Packard. And, how grounded would we be without those Wright Brothers? Just as Ben and Jerry revolutionized the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility, the Atlanta Chapter of IFMA is blazing a trail of its own, by partnering with the Atlanta Community ToolBank to impact local outreach initiatives.

“The ToolBank model empowers charitable groups of all types to implement a diverse range of community improvement projects year-round, “ stated Board President Cavelle Benjamin. “This unique approach enabled more than 39,000 volunteers to complete over 1670 service initiatives in 2009. And, volunteerism has continued to rise, as by mid-2010, ToolBank had already experienced a more than 30% increase in tool usage.”

IFMA Atlanta’s support of the ToolBank is critical to mission delivery. In addition to providing volunteer support at the tool warehouse for general program needs.  IFMA continues to assist in the areas of facility maintenance by providing expert advice and hands on remodeling. Just a couple of examples of this assistance are:

  • Andy Hoover (The BEST Consultant), IFMA member and Partner Lead,  assisted ToolBank by securing a warehouse space from Duke Realty.  This location was used as a temporary ToolBank satellite location in support of Gwinnett’s Great Days of Service.
  • Pat Darroch (Verizon) and Bryan Benedict (Humphries & Company), IFMA members and Partner Lead (Pat), are currently working to improve safety conditions at the ToolBank warehouse and connecting them with resources to accomplish this task.
  • Bryan Benedict (Humphries & Companies), IFMA member, secured the services of Construction Debris Services, Inc.  They recently provided interior demolition of a couple walls, allowing the ToolBank to expand space to accommodate the growing Tool Lending Program.
  • Barbara Miller (Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc.), IFMA member, is currently assisting them with the implementation of the 5S of workplace organization methodology.

These are just a few of the ways IFMA Atlanta has assisted ToolBank in the recent past.

“It is exciting to witness the growth of Tool Lending and how it impacts the local community,” stated CJ Clark, ToolBank’s Master Tool Librarian and active participant in the IFMA partnership. “Hundreds of nonprofits, schools and faith based groups depend on this program to ensure they can plant trees, remove graffiti, build playground and even repair and maintain their own facilities.”

The Atlanta Community ToolBank will celebrate 20 years of service in 2011. “Our new mantra for the 20th anniversary is ReTool Your Take On Charity,” explains Executive Director Patty Russart. “We want to illustrate how an individual’s investment in the ToolBank, whether it’s the gift of time, monetary support or in-kind donations, will literally support thousands of good works, right in their own community. Our partnership with IFMA is truly invaluable, as the resources provided enable us to maximize our own service model, increasing overall community impact even further. ”

The bottom line? IFMA is powering progress. The past 20 years have proven when passionate volunteers are given the tools needed to both mobilize and maintain hands on service projects – communities will strengthen. That means safer, cleaner, happier lives for us all. Now, isn’t that a deal worth making? Visit www.atlanta.toolbank.org to watch the blue tools in action. Better yet, come on down to volunteer some time – rest assured your gift of time will make a difference.

The Child Development Association (CDA), one of IFMA Atlanta’s former Community Services Partners, invites you to attend the re-dedication of their Facility on 08-31-10 at 10:00 am.

This Exterior Renovation was the culmination of the IFMA Community Services Committee Work that started with a Condition Assessment in 2002. Since then Members have assisted them in the replacement of the roof, new HVAC System, new lighting, interior finishes and furnishings and now this Exterior Renovation to insulate the Exterior Walls and provide insulated windows and door assemblies.

This Facility now looks as though it were a new Building!
